Thoughts On What We Are Truly Products Of..

Image
After finishing The Other Wes Moore,   he makes me believe that we are actually products of my expectations. Don’t get me wrong, I think both our environment and our expectations play a part in shaping who we are but he makes me believe that our expectations might play a bigger role.             Through all the hardships he faced, he still made something of himself. He did not let the negative things around him turn negative. He wanted more and expected more for himself so he made sure he got it. Wes Moore did not come from much but he made sure he found a way to obtain the life he wanted.  I still believe that it is very difficult to separate the two. As people we can either be products of our environment or products of our expectations. Sometimes it might feel impossible to not be a product of your environment if you are not surrounding yourself with the right people who can make you forget where you...

Making a Choice

Image
I believe that every choice we make changes the whole line of events that will take place in the future. Anything just as simple as running an errand on a different day instead of the day you originally planned to. The results can be something like you getting stuck in traffic or something as drastic as you getting into an accident. Every choice we make affects the path that our life will take.          I can think of plenty of times when I knew a choice I made could alter my life path. Starting early, I had to make the conscious decision of who I would surround myself with. Growing up, I would always go to my cousins’ house to play because it was not really much to do where I lived. My cousins and I made friends with a few girls who lived in their neighborhood. We were all around the same age, 10-11. Young and full of life. When years passed we were still friends however these girls started to get i...

Are We products of Our Environment or Products of Our Expectations?

Image
Are we products of our environment or are we products of our expectations? I believe we are somehow both. Our environment and expectations both play a part in how we end up as people.           Wes Moore, an author, entrepreneur, and United States Army veteran believes we are only products of our expectations. In some ways I agree with him. Some people do turn out to be exactly what was expected of them. Whether it be the expectations they had for themselves or what someone else expected them to be. Also, whether the expectations were good or bad, those expectations can shape who we are.           The expectations that people have of us can sometimes become the expectations that we have for ourselves. For example, if someone constantly tells a young boy that he will grow up to be nothing, the boy might very well grow up be...

Is Fast Food the New Tobacco?

Smoke too much tobacco, you might  develop  cancer and die. Eat too much fast food, you become obese and possibly die. Is fast food the new  tobacco? YES. Highly addictive, easy to obtain, fast food can definitely do as much damage as tobacco has.      Even though we would be better off without fast food, it is so hard to knock it. Coming from someone who in the past has eaten fast food like I was being sponsored by them, it's just too good to completely let go. Although the thought of some fast food restaurants makes my stomach turn, such as Burger King and KFC, I have my favorites that I just can't get enough of. Why is that?     Fast food has become so  convenient. Especially in the more urban areas everywhere you turn there is at least a McDonald's, Wendy's or Popeyes. I literally have all three of these places within a 1.5 miles radius of my home. Saving money is another reason why fast food is the more lik...

Pop Culture is Good for Everyone!

Image
Popular Culture began in the 1950's with TV, radios, rock n' roll, and carried all the way out to the present day. Pop Culture is defined as modern popular culture that is transmitted via the mass media and is normally aimed at the younger crowd. There used to be a time where only teenagers were really into phones and being on social media but times have changed. Now there are grandparents with social media accounts and even babies who know how to navigate through certain devices and social media platforms. I I have seen it. My cousin who is only 2 years old knows how to work Youtube and even declines a call that tries to interrupt her video.      I love that Pop Culture can become accessible in different forms to a numerous audience. Pop Culture can be expressed in many different ways which can reach different type of people. Some examples are being expressed through fashion (which is one of my favorites), art, sports, and even literature which we might see...

Getting to Know Me

Image
My name is Jada Bey. I am 22 years old, soon to be 23 in October. This is 4th year at NJCU. I am a psychology major. Since my junior year in high school (Technology High School located in Newark, Nj) I've known that I wanted my main focus to be psychology. I have always been interested in studying people and understanding how the mind works. To be completely honest I took this class because it fit well into my schedule. However, anything involving pop culture always grabs my attention.           Becoming literate never came as a challenge to me due to the fact that I was always surrounded by people who had a role childhood education. My mom being a special needs teacher's aid for as long as I can remember and my god-mother whom I was very close with being an early childhood teacher gave me the leverage I needed to be well educated in an environment outside of school. After all, learning does start at the home.      Tracin...
